Hidden gems in TTRPG you may not of heard of Part 4
Today's offering in my Hidden Gems series is a game near and dear to me, it encompasses my favourite genre of entertainment and provides a drama-laden setting that is easy to set up and play within.
All Flesh Must Be Eaten (AFMBE) is a survival horror-themed roleplaying game that takes place in a world overrun by zombies. Players take on the roles of survivors struggling to stay alive in a post-apocalyptic world, where they must scavenge for food and supplies while avoiding or fighting off the undead.
What I love about this Game
The thing I love about the system is how rapidly you can be ready to play. The rules have many archetypes, pre-made characters, with their own strengths and weaknesses, ready to play straight out the gate. There are extensive rules for the generation of your own custom character but if time is at a premium the game can be set up and ready to play within a matter of minutes.
Over the years my group has used the system for a lot of one-shot or short campaign arc games, mostly as Halloween get-togethers with a large dose of horror thrown in for a fun time.
The system works well for this, as we all know that if horror films have taught us anything, it is that survival in a world-ending scenario like a zombie apocalypse is just a matter of staying alive, at all costs.
What does the Game Offer?
The game uses a streamlined, d10-based system for resolving actions known as the Unisystem, with attributes such as Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence, and skills such as Melee Weapons, Firearms, and Survival. Characters can also develop special abilities, such as psychic powers or the ability to control zombies.
The game includes a variety of scenarios and campaigns, ranging from traditional zombie survival to more unconventional settings, such as a post-apocalyptic version of Ancient Rome or a world where vampires and other supernatural creatures also exist. After the initial release of the rules, Eden released a number of other settings, ranging from a full martial arts-based setting to a dungeons and dragons-themed setting.
Conclusion
Overall, AFMBE is a game that emphasizes survival horror and character-driven storytelling, with an emphasis on gritty realism and a sense of constant danger which is what I love about it.
Thanks for reading and if like me you love all things undeath then I would highly recommend taking a look at AFMBE to see if you and your group would enjoy a system that works best as one-shots or limited-run campaigns where just surviving is the most important thing you can do. :)
